I guess I'm just posting for the sake of posting tonight. I saw an amazing film by David Cunningham this week called 'To End All Wars'. It was phenomenal, one of those hidden gems that just blow you away when you see it. I'm not going to review it, because my brother has already done great job of that. I'm so tired. I shouldn't have even started this. Terrible.

OPEN WATER: A review

"Just so you know, everyone is telling us this movie is terrible, and leaving in the first 20 minutes, we're just telling people that so they are prepared".

This was the 'warning' I got when I bought my tickets to go see Open Water last night. The 16 year old girl at the ticket booth felt it was her duty to forwarn me of the impending failure of this film to entertain me. The most interesting thing to me, was how many people heeded her warning, and decided to go for a safer, more entertaining flick.

Well I'll agree with her on one point. I can see how the masses, who gobbled up Spiderman, and XXX, would find this movie a bit dull. I mean there was no real soundtrack, very few noticeable fx, and it was absolutely realistic. Who could enjoy that?

ME!!

This was possibly the most intense, gut wrenching, and troubling film I have ever seen. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's an instant classic, but, it definetly is innovative.

Here's the story. A middle aged, executive classed couple book a scuba trip to a tropical island. They hit the water for a wonderful dive, only to emerge and realize they have been left behind by their boat, in the middle of the ocean. That's it. Oh, the water is shark infested. To tell more would give away too much, and ruin a shocking finale.

A psychological thriller, that didn't rely on special fx, or Jaws inspired music. The stoccato like rhythm the director uses to tell this gripping story is highly effective. There are few reprieves from the non-stop terrors that the two divers experience. I found myself shivering from the cold water, and my stomach turning from the unseen terrors.

Go for a swim, and go see Open Water. Be patient with a mundane beginning, and you will be rewarded with a truly heart stopping experience.

What a Lazy Blogger I am.......

I started this blog with intent of jotting something everyday, and I'm lucky to hit once a week. I have to admit, the only reason I am making an entry right now, is just for the sake of blogging. I wonder, does that defeat the whole purpose? I am definetly not going to start getting philosophical, it's really just plain laziness. I think I'll go to a movie today, and then I'll write a review. There are far more important things to write about, but, well.............I'm being lazy.

Rambling on, and on, and on.............

Today has been utterly mundane. There have, however, been a few passing distractions that I would like to note. Distraction#1 - I am alive, healthy, utterly blessed, and I have nice ankles. Distraction #2 - While driving to work today I started listening to an audio book that has been quite captivating! Distraction#3 - I drank 8 beers on the car ride home.......just kidding.
Mundane days are all right.
I wanted to mention a movie that is a bit obscure (not a huge commercial success), but definetly in my top ten. Get Shorty. Witty, light, entertaining, and best of all self depricating. Travolota, of whom I only moderately like, was outstanding. In fact the whole cast was great. This movie really exemplifies what I like best about movies, story and characters. It was simply a quirky story, with simple, but interesting/comical characters.
I'm tired of typing.

2nd blog

I started my 1st blog off, kind of lamely so maybe this will be better. I said that I loved movies. The last film I saw in the theatre was 'The Village', and I thought it wasn't too bad. I am a M. Night Shyamalan fan. It's basically an interesting story, creatively told, and relatively surprising. Shyamalan has a great knack for twisting the plot in such a surprising way, and yet when you look back you realize how obvious it all is. I didn't find the movie 'amazing' by any menas, but its the last film I saw, and this is one of my first blogs.
I think the theme of my blogs will probably be discussions on films!!
